Holster work: The Combat Draw
Service Description
One of the great challenges for a self defense shooter is finding a place to practice on an action range. Static ranges available to the public for walk on shooting are almost exclusively lane and booth format, slow fire only. That leaves folks shooting at one target, in a straight line, at unrealistic speeds. We teach all our classes on an action range which frees us from those restrictions and offers a far more realistic setting. To fully use those benefits, our students learn to use holsters and practice movement with their pistols. Even if you're not a CCW holder or a competition shooter, learning to use a holster opens up a far more realistic training environment. We'll have a couple hours of class time discussing what makes a good holster and how to set it up for efficiency, safety, and comfort. If you're bringing your own holster, please understand that they need to mount the pistol between your belly button and your strong side hip. We generally recommend an Outside the Waistband, strong side mounted holster for your first holster in either kydex or a hybrid kydex/leather set up. Shoulder rigs, chest rigs, behind the back, ect. are not allowed due to range safety rules. Appendix in the Waist Band, Outside the Waistband, or inside the waistband in the strong side position are all acceptable. Reach out if you have questions. After the classroom period, we'll hit the range and practice our two basic draws: the speed draw and the close quarters combat draw. The latter emphasizes weapon retention when our assailant is at close range, the former is more applicable to ranged shots when are targets are farther away. This course is truly a breakthrough course. When you can safely and effectively deploy your pistol from a holster, you're ready to start learning advanced skills like low light/night shooting, movement, use of concealment and cover, ect. It leaves you well prepared to start competition shooting in IDPA or USPSA, and opens up opportunities to come to practice during our Dojo sessions. Read the blog to learn more about the Dojo trainings available weekly.
